Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with less favorable traits. This variation in reproduction could eventually lead to the development and emergence of new species. The word “evolution” is derived from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing. However, the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took form in the fields of science and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species transformed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term “transmutation” to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term “evolution” from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species evolve into other species in a gradual and predictable way. Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. In time this genetic variation can cause the emergence of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. This shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and it drives most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as the growth in muscle mass from exercise or diet cannot be considered examples of evolution since they are not inherited by the next generation. Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific experiments Creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial and claim that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high-school textbooks and have also gotten rid of any mention of the evolutionary roots of humans and the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestral bird's ancestor. Why is Evolution important to humanity? Evolution explains how Earth and all its living species evolved. It is one of the fundamentals of biology and helps scientists to understand how living things function and develop. Evolution also demonstrates how different species are interconnected. Scientists study evolution to understand the natural world and to discover useful information like the development of new drugs. The evidence for biological evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe as well as life on earth, and it has been thoroughly tested and confirmed over the course of many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology doesn't interfere with religious beliefs, as the theory deals only with objects, events and processes in the physical world. In fact many religious individuals have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolutionary theory. For example certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution, and that humans share an ancestry with other animals. It is important for science educators to advocate for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in a few nations around the world there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbooks to include content on the evolution of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx. Although these are alarming developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a diverse range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists. The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reason for this is a variety of reasons. Certain scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries for example, such as the development of medications, while others are motivated by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, generally to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a profound faith in God and are seeking to understand how the universe works. What is Creationism? Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be taken literally. While Creationists may not all be Christian, they are a majority. Creationists are usually divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists. The most common type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were only created recently. OECs are less well known However, they are as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a myth. Both forms of creationism deny the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life came to be on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles out of fear they might lose their credibility. Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their position “theistic evolution.” This is also known as “continuous evolutionism” or the “evolution of species created.” The theory suggests that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to change over time. They believe that the original species were created simultaneously, and that they developed slowly afterwards. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and claim that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible. When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this drive. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its sights are now set on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution too. STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. Its goal, it says is to cleanse the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” that paints an image of students as being negative. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of students in biology revealed that half of them didn't believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the US. The KACR has achieved many things through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. This sparked an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present. On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
